Oddworld Wiki

Hi! Welcome to the Oddworld Fandom Wiki!

Recently OWI has began to publish posts on their Twitter citing articles from this site, along with content that heavily implies that the wiki is in some way official or sanctioned.

We'd like to dispel this rumor now: The Fandom Wiki is 100% community run and has in fact been long plagued by information of dubious validity, despite the valiant efforts of its editors (whose job we really appreciate, keep up the good fight!). For this reason, we'd like to ask our readers to take everything here with a great chunk of salt, especially when it comes to content without valid citations.

If you wish to fight against misinformation, you're encouraged to contribute high-quality content to the wiki—that is content that's propped up by a trusted source (examples include: Oddworld.com, Magog on the March, or The Oddworld Library) and contain no headcanons, theorizing, or any further content not directly coming from Oddworld Inhabitants.

Thank you for your attention and understanding! Happy reading and editing!

Boom Machine

Boom Machines as it appears in Abe's Exodus.

The Boom Machine is a machine that dispenses grenades. The grenades can be picked up by Abe and used to destroy environmental hazards or enemies.

In Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee and Oddworld: Abe's Exoddus, a Boom Machine dispenses a single grenade at a time, requiring Abe to return to the machine every time a new grenade is needed. In Oddworld: New 'n' Tasty, a Boom Machine dispenses multiple grenades at once, depending on the set difficulty level.[1] Abe gets 5 grenades on easy difficulty, 3 on normal, and 1 on hard.

Grenades can be thrown by Abe in an arc from the position he is standing, as well as dropping them at his feet while running or standing still. While aiming the grenade will start to count down with a series of beeps, which can be used to time the explosion of the grenade. If Abe aims a grenade for too long without throwing it will explode and kill Abe in the process.

The explosion of a grenade will destroy most other explosives, including land mines and UXBs. They are also able to kill any creatures caught in the blast radius, including Mudokons. Chant suppressors may also be destroyed by a well timed grenade, allowing Abe to possess enemies previously out of his reach.

Notes[]

  • Holding onto a live grenade before throwing it is referred to as 'cooking' a grenade. Both in video games and in real life, this technique is often used to reduce the enemy's time to react.
  • In Oddworld: New 'n' Tasty, blowing up a chant suppressor with a cooked grenade unlocks the 'Cooked to Perfection' achievement.
